huffington post" -- ryan grimm joins us. you write that the senate modestly occurred filibuster's. essentially, what did they agree to? caller: what they agreed to is something, a series of steps that will quicken the pace of legislation in the senate. there has been a battle raging for the last couple of years over how they would rewrite the rules of the senate this chamber. there were two separate objectives that slightly overlap. one is that progressive senators wanted a higher quality of legislation, it wanted more progressive legislation to be able to get through, and a requirement of getting 60 votes rather than a simple majority was standing in the way. for somebody like majority leader harry reid -- harry reid, it was the volume of legislation. he thought the chamber was too backed up by the number of bills. under the current system, it could take an entire week to get legislation through, even if it had a near majority support, because of all the different rules involving 30 hours a post- cloture time, and intervening day, another cloture vote, and a cloture vote before

's hope that winding down happens very quickly. chris, thanks very much. ryan smith served as a u.s. marine infantry man in iraq. he raised questions about women on the front lines. he's joining us now along with first-term congresswoman tulsey who served in combat in iraq as well. thank to both of you for joining us. and thanks for your service to the united states. what you wrote in "the wall street journal," yes, a woman is as capable as a man as pulling a trigger but our goal of our nation's war is to fight and win wars. s has the government considered whether introducing women into the above-described situation would have made my unit more or less combat effective? congresswoman, you served in iraq. respond to what ryan just wrote. >> i think this is what is going to be the biggest challenge now that the policy change has been announced, which is getting folks to understand in reality what has already been happening. the contributions that women in uniform have been making in combat settings, the hardships that they have been dealing with. >> ryan, why do you have such strong

republican vice president nominee paul ryan. he talks about the future of the republican party. representative ryan spoke saturday at a conference hosted by the national review institute. this is about 25 minutes. >> all right, ladies and gentlemen, we are about to hear from our next speaker who is congressman paul ryan. [applause] when congressman ryan was picked as mitt romney's running mate last year, he became a subject of fascination. everything about him, extending even to his workout routine which is the p90x workout routine. and for those of you who aren't fit enough to have a workout routine, it sounds like it's some advanced piece of military weaponry -- [laughter] or if you happen not to work out an hour every day before breakfast, the p90x, from what i understand, involves this whole theory is you confuse your muscles, as they call it, by constantly trying a new and different workout every day. and we have evidence that paul ryan is very loyal to this workout regime because, actually, his most innovative workout has been caught on tape and broadcast very broadly. i'

-term extension to give each chamber to go through order and pass a budget in our house. obviously, paul ryan and his team will work through, i think even a bolder budget to send to the senate. the senate and the president might not accept the bill we passed. but in fact, they are going to pass the bill and the president is going to sign it. as speaker boehner said, this is something the house should continue to do. we are in the opposition but we're in the majority but as the opposition we should take the opportunity to paint bold principles and stand by those and then we can campaign on those in the next two years. >> so, tom, you are a conservative. did you become conservative at some point, are you a natural born conservative? >> right from the beginning. i grew up in a very small town. my parents were not political at all. my father would not put up a yard sign until my campaign, thankfully, he did not want to offend the opponent. >> a good neighbor. >> so i had a conservative up bringing in terms of morals but not really what you would call a political upbringing. i did not think much a

of hand make a big mistake. we he heard from one of those hunters, congressman paul ryan this morning. >> let's go beyond just this debate and let's make sure we get deeper. what's our policy on mental illness? what's going on in our culture that produces this kind of thing and i hope we just don't skip that and bring out political ideas that recycle failed policies of the past. >> ryan's republican colleagues marcia blackburn suggested today banning assault weapons will not prevent mass murder. >> doing a so-called assault weapons ban is going after a symptom and as teachers have said to me, don't focus on whatever is the weapon. get to the root cause. >> senator feinstein said today she doesn't expect a vote on her proposed gun control legislation for a while. gregg? >> gregg: peter doocy in washington. peter, thanks. >> well, new reaction today to the pentagon's decision to lift the ban on women in combat, which could open up thousands of front line military positions as soon as this year. some critics of the policy though they say that the mixing of genders on the battlefield is a

, "politico" just popped up a story about how speaker boehner, with the help of paul ryan, turned around a conference that was ready to go off the next cliff. they wanted to shut down the government. they wanted to default on america's debt. at that williamsburg retreat, he walked them through what the consequences of that was, showed them polling about the blame that they would take for it, let them talk instead of imposing a solution on them. and very calmly, with paul ryan being the key salesman because of his credibility with conservatives, convincing them to go ahead with this three-month extension that joe, you say, is a smart idea. >> it is a smart idea. and this morning, you know, we were talking about chris christie being one of the favorites in 2016. "politico" this morning's going behind the curtain again with a question that everybody in washington's asking. are the democrats going to be putting up joe biden for president in 2016? here's how the vice president answered that question when asked yesterday. >> is there any reason you wouldn't run? >> oh, there's a whole lot of r

to wisconsin congressman and republican vice presidential nominee, paul ryan, who called recipients of federal benefits takers during the 2012 presidential campaign. >> the commitments we make to each other, through medicare and medicaid and social security, these things do not sap our initiative, they strengthen us. they do not make us a nation of takers, they free us to take the risks that make this country great. >> obama became the first president to use the word "gay" in an inaugural address, casting the fight for gay rights as part of a broader struggle for equality. >> we, the people, declared today that the most evident of truths, that all of us are created equal. is the star that guides us still, just as it guided our forebearers through seneca falls and stonewall, our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anybody else under the law. >> and if there was any question about whether president obama would go big in his second term, he answered that in this address, laying out an ambitious second-term agenda from tax reform, to immigration overhaul, pr

know, very brave ambassadors like ryan crocker, one of our very best, who it would be difficult to say, ryan, you can't go do this even though you decided you should do it. what we're trying to do is create a more ongoing discussion between our ambassadors, our bureaus back in the state department who are regional experts, and our security people so that at the very least no ambassador is taking an unnecessary risk, however that is defined. >> with regard to ambassador stevens, certainly it was brave of him to go to benghazi on the date he did. i have to ask you honestly, though, was there anything in his itinerary on the 10th or 11th that required his personal presence? >> he certainly thought so, congressman he did, of course, discuss this with his own security people. we do have regional security officers in these posts. they are the ones that an ambassador will turn. to he believes it was important for him to go to benghazi, there were a number of meetings that he was holding and some public events that he had on his schedule and you know, he was someone who really believed strongl
